La Vie en Rose
Ever since February rolled around, I've had Valentine's Day on my mind, but for reasons you might not expect. Entering the new year, one of my goals was to learn how to love people with a specific verse in mind:
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." (John 13:34).
I've been a Christian all my life. I never thought I would struggle with such a basic concept, but I had become so bogged down by pain caused by friends and family that I couldn't see past my anger... and it shook me to the point of questioning God. I was so overwhelmed with how prideful, immoral, and selfish people could be that I couldn't understand how God could possibly love us, and the idea of loving people as He does felt like an insurmountable mountain. 34,213,532,545 tissues later, and it clicked. We're not some foreign entity; we're His children. Of course He would do everything to love us and have a relationship with us! So simple, I know, but it's been these simple truths that have proven to be the most healing for me, and enabled me to move forward seeing the world and people through God's lens.
Each day since then has proceeded with the question, "How can I love somebody today?" I think many people feel they have to make grand gestures or give extravagant gifts to make someone feel loved, but the smallest acts sometimes have the most profound effects on people. You do what you can in the opportunity you have to bless someone, like fetching something for someone, or telling someone they look beautiful. Obviously, I'm the furthest from perfect, and just one crazy driver who's a little too friendly with the horn will immediately have me cursing (I'm working on it guys). But I challenge you guys to keep this question in mind for the rest of the month. Believe me, it'll bless you more than you'll ever expect.
